The Yorkshire Alliance unites individuals, communities, and organisations across our great region with one clear goal: to achieve meaningful regional governance for Yorkshire. United by pride in our shared identity and belief in fair funding, accountable decision-making, and powers closer to the people. We are building a broad, inclusive movement to shape Yorkshire’s future — by Yorkshire, for Yorkshire.
Yorkshire faces a constant repeat of financial cuts, decaying roads & rails, struggling schools, and a stuttering economy. While London and the South East take the lion's share of investment our communities are left to suffer. We receive only scraps from London's table. There’s a public spending shortfall of £14 billion across Yorkshire – every year ! We propose an end to London-centric politics. We need meaningful regional governance giving us a fair share of public investment in transport, education, health, and so much more.
Yorkshire’s future should be determined by the people who live and work here, drawing on our shared history, identity, and economic potential to shape decisions that affect our daily lives. Yorkshire communities deserve the power to choose how key services are run, how investment is directed, and how our voice is heard here at home and nationally. Any change must come from open, inclusive debate across every part of the region, with residents, businesses, and civic groups all having a meaningful say. What matters most is not a pre‑packaged blueprint, but a democratic process through which Yorkshire folk themselves can decide the form and direction of their own self‑government.
Why it is important for Yorkshire
Yorkshire’s problems are not accidental — they are the result of choices.
For decades, Yorkshire has been underfunded, under-prioritised, and overlooked. Not because we lack potential, but because the system that controls the money and the power is stacked against places like ours.
We see it in the numbers. We see it in transport spending that lags far behind London. We see it in infrastructure projects promised, delayed, scaled back, or cancelled altogether. We see it in local councils pushed to the brink, forced to cut services not because demand has fallen, but because funding has.
And underfunding doesn’t stay neatly in budget spreadsheets.
It spreads — into everyday life.
It means unreliable transport that limits where people can work.
It means high streets hollowed out while investment flows elsewhere.
It means schools, NHS services, and social care stretched to breaking point.
It means talented young people leaving Yorkshire, not because they want to, but because opportunity has been drained away. And when those decisions go wrong, who pays the price? not Westminster, Yorkshire does.
When power is distant, accountability disappears. Local leaders are forced to manage decline instead of creating prosperity. Communities are told to “do more with less” while watching other regions surge ahead with investment we can only dream of.
A self-governed Yorkshire would mean control over our priorities — not handouts, not begging rounds, but fair funding and local decision-making.
It would mean investing in transport so that Yorkshire can function. Backing industries that already thrive here instead of chasing London-centric models. Funding public services based on need, not party political convenience.
Most importantly, it would mean ending the cycle where Yorkshire is expected to cope quietly while others prosper loudly.
What we do.
Yorkshire Alliance is a pressure campaign group playing a vital role in keeping the case for regional governance for Yorkshire firmly in the public eye by working alongside, but independent from, party politics and appealing across party lines. This includes actively engaging with traditional media through press releases, opinion pieces, and interviews to ensure Yorkshire’s voice is heard in political and public debate, while maintaining a strong and consistent social media presence that shares clear messaging, infographics, and public engagement campaigns.
A key role is to educate and inform the public by explaining how regional governance would work in practice and how it could improve everyday issues such as transport, skills, housing, and economic investment, while also challenging misinformation concerns about cost, bureaucracy, or duplication. Building alliances with businesses, trade unions, community organisations, cultural bodies, and academic institutions strengthens legitimacy and demonstrates widespread support. Producing and promoting credible research and evidence on funding inequalities and economic potential further reinforces the argument, while celebrating and promoting Yorkshire as a distinct historic, cultural, and economic entity helps foster civic pride and reinforces the case for self-governance as a natural and positive step for the region’s future.
